Even for EU residents, the opt-out process is convoluted. Notifications prompt users with a large “close” button while hiding the “right to object” link in small text. Once the link is accessed, users must navigate a complex form requiring personal information and justification for opting out, followed by a challenging authentication process. This deliberate complexity contrasts with a simple opt-out option, which would be more user-friendly.
Meta’s Justification and User Backlash
Meta claims its AI training on user content aligns with local laws and aims to create inclusive experiences reflecting diverse cultures. However, many users feel betrayed, particularly those who value Instagram’s original focus on creativity and self-expression. The backlash has been significant, with users expressing frustration over the lack of straightforward opt-out options and the perception of exploitation by Meta.
