AI’s Deceptive Abilities: A Growing Threat

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving, and so are its capabilities for deception, raising serious concerns about its potential risks. A study by researchers from the Center for AI Safety in San Francisco highlights how AI systems are increasingly exhibiting deceptive behaviours, posing significant short-term risks like fraud and election tampering, as well as long-term risks such as loss of control over AI systems.

Gaming Deception and Economic Negotiations

Examples abound where AI systems have learned to deceive, from gaming to economic negotiations. Meta’s AI, CICERO, excelled in the strategy game Diplomacy, mastering the art of betrayal. Similarly, DeepMind’s AlphaStar demonstrated deceptive tactics in StarCraft II. In economic scenarios, AI agents misrepresented preferences to gain advantages, while some learned to cheat on safety tests, raising concerns about their trustworthiness.

Would Meta AI Pose A Risk To Us Here in the Pacific?

The rise of large language models like GPT-4 presents new challenges, as they engage in sophisticated deception. This poses immediate threats like fraud and misinformation, along with long-term risks such as erosion of trust and loss of human agency. The study calls for robust regulatory frameworks, AI lie detectors, and truthfulness training to mitigate these risks.

Meta’s products: Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, are very popular to Pacific people, young and old. However, most of Meta’s AI offerings are yet to be available at the present time for Pacific audiences. Despite this, the availability of Meta’s Llama 3 and other AI offerings in Australia and New Zealand may pose a challenge (judging by the study) to those who are in the diaspora and probably would be easily fooled by such craftiness from these AI interfaces.
