AICTE Launches AI Certificate Course for Engineering Faculty
In response to the shortage of qualified faculty in emerging fields like artificial intelligence and data science, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has introduced short-term certificate courses for core engineering faculty members. These courses are part of AICTE’s quality improvement programs, targeting faculty from mechanical, civil, electrical, and electronics departments with a minimum of five years of experience. Offered by IITs, these six-month hybrid programs are free of cost, and applications close on June 6.
Addressing Faculty Shortage in Emerging Technologies
The demand for AI and data science courses is surging, especially in Tamil Nadu, where it is the second most sought-after course after computer science engineering. Despite adding over 25,000 seats in emerging areas for the 2024-25 academic year, a significant challenge remains: the lack of trained faculty. Engineering colleges are exploring various strategies, including upskilling current faculty and hiring industry experts. However, the high cost of upskilling, ranging from 2 to 4 lakh per faculty member, presents an additional hurdle.
Collaborative Efforts to Enhance Faculty Expertise
Colleges such as Rajalakshmi Engineering College and PSG College of Technology are leveraging internal and external resources to mitigate the faculty shortage. Rajalakshmi Engineering College is creating a pool of AI and data science experts, while PSG College of Technology taps into its alumni network working in emerging fields. Additionally, Anna University is considering accepting core engineering faculty as AI instructors after certification to further alleviate the issue. The collective efforts aim to ensure that the expanding interest in AI and data science is met with adequately trained educators.
