In the latest film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” AI played a pivotal role in merging the facial features of child actor Alyla Browne with Anya Taylor-Joy, creating a seamless transition as the character ages. Director George Miller aimed to ensure continuity between the two actors portraying Furiosa, following the audience’s adjustment to a new lead in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Taylor-Joy revealed in an interview that during the transition, up to 80% of her features were digitally blended with Browne’s by the film’s climax.

The technical details behind this feat remain under wraps, but key players include visual effects companies DNEG, Framestore, and Metaphysic AI. Metaphysic AI, known for its advancements in ageing and de-aging technology, likely contributed significantly. This aligns with their recent involvement in multiple high-profile films, including Robert Zemeckis’ “Here.” The use of AI in character ageing has previously been showcased by Industrial Light & Magic, notably with a young Harrison Ford in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
