India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Girish Chandra Murmu emphasises the significant role of AI in revolutionising public auditing. Through partnerships, like the recent MoU with the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, AI and emerging technologies are set to redefine audit practices. AI-driven algorithms and predictive analytics enhance the speed and precision of data analysis, enabling auditors to identify patterns, anomalies, and potential risks more accurately.
Advancing Efficiency and Insight
Murmu highlights that AI’s integration into auditing fosters unprecedented opportunities for efficiency and innovation. By leveraging machine learning and data analytics, traditional methodologies are enhanced, improving the quality of public expenditure. Capacity building remains a focal point, with initiatives like the International Centre for Audit of Local Governance (iCAL) aimed at training auditors for local bodies, both rural and urban, strengthening local governance and grassroots engagement.
Collaborative Efforts
iCAL, based in Rajkot, serves as a collaborative platform uniting policymakers, administrators, and auditors to improve accountability and governance. This centre engages with elected representatives and officials from local governments across India and global Supreme Audit Institutions, aiming to enhance public auditing standards. With over 2.5 lakh panchayats and 7,000 municipal bodies in the country, such initiatives are crucial for effective policy execution and development efforts.
