December 9, 2024AI for Good: PNG’s Bold Vision for the Future
PNG’s Minister for Information and Communication Technology, Timothy Masiu, unveiled plans for an AI Adoption Policy Framework, designed to guide the nation’s digital transformation, reports One PNG. Following his participation in the 2024 World Internet Conference in China, Masiu emphasized how AI and digital solutions could bridge the digital divide, combat literacy gaps, and empower remote communities.
At the summit, themed “Embracing a People-centered and AI-for-good Digital Future,” Masiu stressed the potential of inclusivity-focused AI to serve as an equalizer. “When guided by inclusivity and fairness, AI can bridge connectivity gaps and create new economic opportunities,” he stated.
The Lagatoi Declaration: A United Pacific Front
Masiu urged Pacific nations to align with the Lagatoi Declaration, a regional initiative addressing shared challenges in digital connectivity and cybersecurity. He called on international development partners to support the Pacific region’s ambitions. Despite its small population, Masiu highlighted PNG and the Pacific’s vast potential, affirming that the region is poised to make significant strides in technology.
Masiu’s optimism reflects PNG’s commitment to a digitally inclusive future, positioning itself as a leader in the Pacific’s digital revolution.
