Forensic Biologist Calls for Enhanced Crime Scene Photography
A forensic biologist has urged the Royal PNG Constabulary to upgrade its crime scene photography methods. Georgina Korei from The National reports that current practices rely heavily on conventional surface photography, often using phone cameras, which may not provide the quality needed for reliable evidence. Modern advancements, such as 2D and 3D photometry, advanced scanning systems like 3D Zonal and LiDaL, and aerial drone photography, offer far superior methods.
Importance of Real-Time 3D Imagery
Takoboy, who testified in an inquiry into the January 10 riot at the Apec Haus in Port Moresby, highlighted that real-time 3D walkthroughs created using AI and advanced photometry are essential for accurate evidence collection. These would cost about US$2000-5000 (PGK7842.80-19,607)He emphasised that without incorporating these technologies, the forensic unit risks compromising the integrity of evidence, as many photographic records are currently not taken by specialised officers or cameras.
Need for Better Evidence Documentation
Takoboy also criticised the lack of an exhibit documentation registry within the constabulary’s forensic unit. Proper collection, registration, recording, tagging, and storage of evidence are critical for maintaining the chain of custody and ensuring the accuracy of forensic analyses. He stressed that failure to adhere to international forensic standards undermines the unit’s effectiveness and the overall quality of evidence in criminal investigations.
How Good is AI in Solving Crime?
AI has had some success in ensuring previously unsolvable cases have been closed and perpetrators apprehended. In Delhi, India, for example, a ‘blind case’ was finally resolved through AI recreation of a sketch revealing the perpetrator after a number of years on the run. A lot of perpetrator databases are now being reorganised and collated using AI, leading to quicker arrests and prosecutions. With the rising rate of crime in PNG, it would be imperative for the government and law enforcement to utilise any and all means to achieve justice faster, especially with AI.
