August 15, 2024AI-Powered Community Engagement in Samoan Language
The Talanoa Project, a pilot initiative in New Zealand, uses IBM’s AI virtual agent, Watson, to engage with the Samoan community in their native language, reports Samoa Times. Developed by Beca, the project aims to gather feedback from Samoans who might otherwise be excluded from public consultations due to language and cultural barriers. The AI agent, named Tala, conducts open-ended conversations, allowing participants to share their thoughts naturally rather than through scripted surveys.
Cultural and Technical Challenges
While initial concerns focused on real-time translation accuracy, the project faced more significant cultural challenges. Ensuring Tala could respectfully navigate formal and casual Samoan language was crucial. Despite some translation imperfections, IBM Watson effectively maintained natural conversations, thanks to a diverse team of interns and over 500 Beca members who trained the AI assistant.
Positive Impact and Future Development
The trial received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with participants expressing comfort in using technology that speaks their native language. This success highlights the importance of culturally sensitive AI in community engagement. As online consultation becomes increasingly vital, the Talanoa Project’s findings will guide further development to enhance community feedback collection and analysis.
