According to Yahoo News, a manipulated voice recording of US President Biden advised voters in New Hampshire to refrain from voting in a Democratic primary election. The message suggested holding onto their votes for the November election and cleverly included one of Biden’s distinctive phrases, stating, “What a bunch of malarkey”.

Threat of Deepfakes in the Pacific
This concerning trend has emerged in the world of politics. Detecting deepfakes in the region would be far more challenging than the tech-advanced Western world where they already struggle to detect and trace deepfakes. Disguised as the voice of leaders, these messages can influence Island voters negatively as crucial elections come up. We need to be aware and cautious of this growing issue because deepfakes are easy and cheap to produce making it a shrewd weapon for politicians in their warfare.

There is a pressing need for improved detection tools and regulations to be made available to small island states’ election offices therefore, investing in technologies that safeguard against misinformation is paramount. Policymakers also need to implement safeguards against fake audio recordings to prevent any interference with our democratic processes. Above all, we need to take everything we see or hear with a grain of salt and make informed decisions using credible news platforms. Donor nations… we are going to need some help!
