A Push for Ethical AI in Healthcare
The USA has announced a plan to implement ethical guardrails for artificial intelligence in healthcare, reports Ars Technica. With AI being increasingly utilized for predictive modeling and decision-making, concerns have arisen about algorithmic bias potentially shutting out vulnerable populations. For example, AI tools predicting patient no-shows have been criticized for potentially reinforcing inequities when used without safeguards. The proposed regulations aim to ensure that AI tools are developed and deployed transparently, with specific measures to prevent discrimination or harm to patients.
Expanding Access to Weight-Loss Medications
Alongside the AI regulations, the administration is pushing to expand Medicare and Medicaid coverage for popular GLP-1 weight-loss medications, such as Wegovy and Zepbound. These drugs, vital for combating obesity-related health issues, were previously excluded due to restrictive interpretations of the Medicaid and CHIP Acts. If enacted, the policy could make these life-changing treatments accessible to over 15 million Americans, costing an estimated $36 billion over the next decade. The move reflects a broader strategy to reduce healthcare disparities and improve patient outcomes.
