The UN General Assembly reached a Pact for the Future consensus, with AI being one of the key policy points, this Monday.
World Leaders Adopt Pact for the Future
On Sunday, global leaders endorsed the Pact for the Future, a landmark declaration aimed at fostering peace, sustainability, and inclusion for future generations on Monday (23/09), reports the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA). Despite objections from countries like Russia and North Korea, the pact was unanimously approved, highlighting five key areas: sustainable development, peace, technology, youth involvement, and global governance reform. The Global Digital Compact, an annex to the pact, establishes the first international framework for regulating AI, while the Declaration on Future Generations emphasizes protecting the environment and ensuring decisions today benefit future populations. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for immediate global action to address pressing challenges like climate change and inequality.
