UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged global collaboration in ensuring access to artificial intelligence (AI) during a forum on AI capacity building in Shanghai, according to the UN media site. He warned that AI tools are concentrated in a few powerful companies and countries, creating global inequalities. With AI’s potential to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), international cooperation is essential.

Guterres highlighted that the risks of AI, like the benefits, are also unevenly distributed. Without safeguards, AI could widen digital divides and disproportionately affect vulnerable populations. He emphasized the need for inclusive governance of AI to ensure its benefits reach everyone.
AI for Sustainable Development
At the upcoming Summit of the Future, governments are expected to endorse a Global Digital Compact to establish guidelines for AI. Guterres also noted the UN’s ongoing efforts, including recommendations from the High-level Advisory Body on AI, aimed at fostering global AI development and addressing inequalities.
