Recent technological advances in satellite imagery and AI analysis are playing a crucial role in preserving Tonga’s forests, as highlighted in a workshop organised by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) at Tonga’s Forestry Division. The workshop emphasised the importance of Tonga’s National Forest Inventory (NFI), which aims to support sustainable forest management across the nation, reports Talanoa o Tonga.
National Forest Inventory Document Handover
The workshop marked the handover of the National Forest Inventory Document to the Tongan government, alongside training on using satellite imagery for forest management. The NFI’s focus includes documenting forest data collection methods and assessing the carbon sequestration potential of forests and mangroves through high-resolution satellite imagery, a process praised for its cost-effectiveness and reliability.
Continued Support for Sustainable Development
GGGI remains committed to supporting Pacific Island countries, including Tonga, in achieving sustainable, low-carbon, and climate-resilient goals. This support includes the development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Investment Plans and ongoing assistance with Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes.
