July 3, 2024Launch and Initial Rollout
Meta has begun testing AI characters made by creators through its Meta AI studio on Instagram. Announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the feature will first be available in the U.S. These AI chatbots will be clearly labelled to distinguish them from real users. Initially, they will appear in messaging, with a broader rollout expected soon. Early versions have been developed in collaboration with creators like the meme account Wasted and tech creator Don Allen Stevenson III.
Use Cases and Potential
Zuckerberg discussed various use cases for AI avatars, emphasizing their potential to reflect diverse interests through different APIs. He envisions creators and small businesses using these AI tools to interact more effectively with their communities and customers. This initiative aims to help creators engage with their fans by managing the high volume of incoming messages.
Future Developments
Meta plans to refine these AI chatbots continuously, with about 50 creators and a small percentage of users participating in the initial testing phase. The goal is to expand this feature over the next few months and fully launch it by August. Zuckerberg acknowledges that perfecting these AI avatars will be an evolving “art form” and encourages experimentation to determine the most engaging and effective methods for using AI in social media interactions.
