July 4, 2025Fiji’s outdated legislation is making it harder for authorities to respond effectively to technology-enabled abuse, especially as artificial intelligence becomes a tool for harassment and misinformation, reports the Fiji Times.
Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Coordinator, Shamima Ali, says AI is already being used in Fiji to clone voices and manipulate images, yet existing laws are too weak to prosecute offenders or protect victims. “We are still using archaic laws… while perpetrators stay steps ahead with AI tools,” she said.
The Online Safety Commission confirms it is receiving growing complaints of digitally altered content, with most cases involving women and girls. Calls are growing louder for faster legislative updates and greater public awareness.
