A local government politician is in hot water over an AI deepfake video. How will the Pacific cope during their election times?
AI Video Hits Nelson Councillor’s Reputation
Nelson City councillor Campbell Rollo condemned an AI-generated video that circulated online, featuring him using a military-style firearm. The video was posted on a local Facebook page but was quickly removed after the councillor and others voiced concern. RNZ reports that the video was created using AI to manipulate a picture of Rollo, presenting him in a compromising and dangerous light.
The Problem with AI-Generated Content
The AI-generated video, which showed Rollo holding a gun, was accompanied by a caption that accused him of encouraging violence, a claim that deeply disturbed the councillor. Rollo was quick to clarify that the video was not real and was created using his Facebook profile image without his consent. While he acknowledged that the video was likely an attempt at mischief, Rollo expressed concern over the ease with which AI technology could be used to spread misinformation.
Voter Awareness and Election Security
As local elections approach, Rollo and Nelson Mayor Nick Smith warned voters to be vigilant about online content. With the rise of AI-driven fake news, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the public to discern truth from fabrication. Smith emphasized that although the video was “so fake,” it posed a real risk, particularly during elections when false claims could influence voters’ decisions. Both officials urged voters to seek genuine content and verification when encountering political posts online.
Editor’s Comment:
Well, this is a new one! AI trying to play political strategist—and doing a bad job of it! It’s one thing to have fake news, but fake violence? Just wait until AI starts making attack ads. In the meantime, remember: If it looks too ridiculous, it probably is!
