Papua New Guinea’s Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology is prioritising the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the higher education sector, reports the Post-Courier. Acting Secretary Fr Jan Czuba highlighted that AI could revolutionise education by personalising learning, automating administrative tasks, and enabling data-driven decisions. However, this transition demands significant investments in infrastructure, educator training, and ethical guidelines to ensure responsible AI use.
Enhancing Cybersecurity to Protect Educational Institutions
Cybersecurity is a major concern as educational institutions increasingly rely on digital platforms. The Ministry is working closely with cybersecurity experts to develop robust security protocols and invest in cutting-edge technologies to protect sensitive information, including student records and research data. Comprehensive training programs are also being implemented to raise awareness and equip staff and students with the skills to identify and mitigate cyber threats.
Advancing Digitization for a More Accessible Education System
The Ministry is also focused on advancing digitization to modernise Papua New Guinea’s higher education system. Efforts include enhancing digital infrastructure, such as high-speed internet access and online learning platforms, to improve the efficiency of educational institutions. Partnerships with telecommunications providers and tech companies are being strengthened to accelerate this digital transformation, making higher education more accessible and effective for all.
