July 4, 2024NBC Uses AI for Customised Olympic Recaps
NBC is bringing an AI-generated version of sportscaster Al Michaels (known for his famous calls during the 1980 Winter Olympics) to the 2024 Paris Olympics for Peacock subscribers (Hollywood Reporter). This innovative service, dubbed “Your Daily Olympic Recap on Peacock,” will offer personalised highlight playlists tailored to each user’s interests. The AI-generated voice of Michaels will greet users by name and provide recaps of specific sports, viral moments, and athlete backstories. Each recap package will last about 10 minutes, and there are 7 million possible customization options.
AI-Enhanced Sportscasting
The real Al Michaels approved the use of his voice, which was trained using his extensive broadcasting history. NBC Sports editors will review all AI-generated content to ensure accuracy, including correct pronunciations and context, addressing common concerns about generative AI. Michaels, initially sceptical, was impressed by the technology after a demonstration and agreed to participate.
Peacock’s Technological Edge
This move showcases NBC’s commitment to enhancing viewer experience through technology. Kelly Campbell, president of Peacock, highlighted that this personalised recap feature, along with other interactive elements, aims to deliver a unique and immersive Olympics experience for fans. The integration of AI in sports broadcasting could set a new standard for future media offerings.
