July 8, 2024Character.AI Introduces AI Call Feature
Character.AI, backed by a16z, has launched a new feature allowing users to talk to AI characters over calls, supporting languages like English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Tested before its public launch, this feature saw over 3 million users making more than 20 million calls. It’s useful for language practice, mock interviews, and role-playing games. Calls can be easily initiated and controlled, with options to switch between calling and texting seamlessly.
Enhancing User Interaction
In March, Character.AI introduced Character Voices, enabling users to hear characters speak in one-on-one chats. The app now boasts over 1 million user-created voices. The new calling feature aims to make the experience smooth with reduced latency and includes a “Tap to interrupt” option to stop the AI from talking.
Competitors on the Rise
This launch comes amid user complaints on Reddit about changing AI character personalities, which Character.AI attributes to testing variations. Additionally, The Information reported that Google is developing its customized chatbot platform to compete with Meta and Character.AI.
