Councils Say AI Could Save Time and Ratepayer Money
Local governments across New Zealand are embracing artificial intelligence to streamline operations and reduce costs, especially in areas like customer service, building consents, and internal administration, reports Radio New Zealand.
According to the NZ Society of Local Government Managers, many councils are trialling or actively using AI tools to help field resident queries, summarise reports, and process permits more efficiently. With tight budgets and increasing workloads, AI is seen as a lifeline to maintain services without raising rates.
However, experts warn about the risks of relying too heavily on AI — including job displacement, lack of oversight, and reduced human engagement in decision-making. Transparency and ethical use remain key concerns.
