October 9, 2024Samoan Students Write Stridently Amidst AI Surge
The 2024 Samoa Observer Tusitala Short Story Competition celebrated young Samoan writers for their creativity and storytelling excellence, reports the Samoa Observer. Over 500 students participated, with Vaiala Beach School and Saint Mary’s College taking top honours. At the awards ceremony held at the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, Australian High Commissioner William Robinson emphasised the role of storytelling in shaping Samoa’s future, particularly in an era dominated by AI. Judges applauded the students’ efforts and encouraged them to keep writing, acknowledging that storytelling is a journey of growth.
Editor’s Comment: While we applaud these efforts of these storytellers, we’d be skeptical that a few, some or many of the applicants (???) will have used AI to correct grammar, shape sentence structure, or perhaps even offer alternative scenarios in their stories. In the end, culture can easily coexist with AI, and perhaps AI can help culture more efficiently disseminate its impact.
