The report emphasises that while AI can drive economic development and resilience across the region, it is crucial to implement safeguards to mitigate potential risks.

The report presents a varied landscape of AI adoption across the Pacific Islands. Some nations have made progress in digital transformation, while others are still in the early stages of AI implementation. The report stresses the importance of tailored AI strategies that consider each nation’s specific needs and contexts. Key recommendations include strengthening digital infrastructure, ensuring ethical AI deployment, and enhancing regional cooperation.
Building AI Capacity
To support the development of AI in the region, the report recommends the creation of a Pacific Islands AI Technical Assistance Facility. This facility would provide specialised expertise, aid in developing country-specific AI strategies, and bolster capacity-building efforts. The goal is to ensure that the Pacific Islands can effectively leverage AI to tackle emerging challenges and foster sustainable development.
