Putting Kids First
Deakin University is spearheading initiatives to tackle corporate influences on children’s health, focusing on research that prioritizes well-being over profits, reports The Guardian. Researchers at the Australian tertiary institution, based in Melbourne, used AI and Machine Learning (ML) to formulate a tool (called SCANNER) which identifies harmful and persuasive ads for junk food, vaping devices, as well as other harmful advertising which may affect children.
A New Era in Health Research
By advocating for evidence-based policies and practices, Deakin aims to reshape the healthcare landscape. Deakin University also has its researchers start developing AI-powered optical glasses to be worn by children to detect such persuasive and provocative marketing as used for harmful goods. This bold approach challenges industries that prioritize profit margins over public health.
Editor’s Comment:
Finally, a research agenda that asks, “What’s good for the kids?” instead of “What’s good for the shareholders?” AI is a powerful tool, and using it to protect our kids is a wonderful application of its capabilities. Bravo, Deakin!
