August 21, 2024AI’s Role in Shaping the Future Workforce
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly altering the skills required in the workplace, with LinkedIn data revealing that the skills needed for jobs in India will change by 64% by 2030, reports The Print in a Q&A session with Linkedin’s Meg Garlinghouse. As AI becomes more integral to work, professionals and organisations are urged to adopt a skills-first mindset. This approach focuses on viewing jobs as collections of tasks rather than titles, allowing for better identification of tasks that AI can assist with versus those that require human skills. Notably, AI Engineering skills are 2.7 times more prevalent among Indian professionals compared to the global average, highlighting India’s proactive shift toward AI-related learning.
Bridging the Skills Gap Through Public-Private Partnerships
While AI offers opportunities for a more inclusive and equitable labour market, access to these opportunities is not yet universal. Public-private partnerships are crucial in bridging this gap by leveraging resources and expertise to create accessible learning opportunities. For instance, LinkedIn’s collaboration with charcha curated by The/Nudge Institute has focused on providing knowledge about essential skills for the evolving job market. Additionally, LinkedIn’s “Train-the-Trainer” program helps nonprofit leaders maximise the benefits of LinkedIn Premium, enabling them to better support professionals facing barriers.
Advancing a Skills-First Approach for a Fairer Workforce
A shift towards skills-based hiring is levelling the playing field, with LinkedIn data showing that companies can expand their talent pools by up to 12 times in India by prioritising skills over traditional experience. This approach is increasingly being adopted by organisations as they recognize the value of upskilling and reskilling their workforce. LinkedIn is supporting this transition with tools like Skills Match within LinkedIn Recruiter, which helps recruiters identify candidates with the right skills for open roles. The focus on skills-first hiring is not only critical for individual career growth but also essential for organisational success in the AI-driven future.
