Fijian Added to Google Translate Using AI
Artificial Intelligence has unlocked new possibilities for Pacific Island languages, including Fijian. At the Google ICT Facility groundbreaking ceremony in Natadola, Google’s VP of Global Network Infrastructure, Brian Quigley, announced that AI was used to train 255 languages, including Fijian, for Google Translate, reports The Fiji Times. This milestone allows Fijians to access global information in their native language—a feature introduced in July 2024, without human involvement.
AI’s Broader Impact: From Science to Climate Resilience
Google has also expanded AI’s role in scientific discovery and climate crisis management. The free AI system AlphaFold has empowered over 25,000 researchers, revolutionizing scientific studies worldwide. Meanwhile, the Flood Hub tool uses AI to predict floods up to seven days in advance, enabling governments to prepare effectively. Google’s digital connectivity hub in Fiji aims to position the Pacific at the forefront of global digital transformation.
Editor’s Comment: Google has had the ability to offer a quality Fijian language translation for 20+ years! Why did it take AI and a facility built in Fiji to get it done? Welp… better late than never!
