August 9, 2024AI’s Transformative Potential
At the Fiji National University’s College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences (CMNHS) 2024 Health Professionals’ Symposium, held at the Pearl Resort in Pacific Harbour, Fiji, on the 11th of last month, experts discussed the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. In a press release by FNU, CMNHS Assistant Professor Hemanth Lakshmikantha highlighted AI’s ability to enhance patient care through early diagnosis, personalised treatment plans, and efficient data analysis. He noted that AI can streamline administrative tasks and predict disease outbreaks, making healthcare delivery more efficient and accurate.
Balancing Benefits and Challenges
While AI offers significant advantages, such as improving diagnostic accuracy and operational efficiency, there are inherent challenges to consider. Dr. Lakshmikantha and other speakers emphasised the importance of ensuring AI augments rather than replaces human involvement in healthcare. They warned that over-reliance on AI could perpetuate biases and exacerbate health inequalities. Critical thinking and vigilance are essential to maintaining ethical standards and empathy in patient care.
Adapting to AI in Education
CMNHS Acting Dean Dr. Amelia Turagabeci and Head of School Health Sciences Raymond Keshwan stressed the need for responsible integration of AI in medical education. Dr. Turagabeci pointed out that while AI tools can aid learning, they should not replace critical thinking skills. Keshwan described AI as a “copycat” that reproduces existing knowledge without generating new insights. Both educators underscored the importance of adapting curricula to incorporate AI while preserving ethical considerations and original thought in medical training.
