McDonald’s is discontinuing its AI drive-thru ordering program in partnership with IBM by July 26th, 2024. This decision affects over 100 restaurants where the system was being tested. The AI chatbot, introduced in 2021, aimed to speed up service, but the company has yet to clarify why the partnership is ending, as reported by Restaurant Business.
Exploring New AI Partnerships
Despite ending the IBM deal, McDonald’s remains optimistic about AI’s role in drive-thru ordering. A potential future solution might involve Google, with whom McDonald’s made a vague announcement in December. Google has been working on AI chatbot technology with Wendy’s, which started testing last year and has since expanded.
Fast Food Industry’s AI Pursuit
McDonald’s AI efforts extend beyond drive-thrus, including mobile ordering, in-store kiosks, and kitchen automation. Other fast food chains like White Castle and Carl’s Jr. are also experimenting with AI for drive-thru orders, often supported by human workers remotely. These experiments won’t be hitting Pacific outlets soon, but is a snapshot of what fast food may be in the future.
