Fiji is harnessing new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to advance its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reports FijiVillage. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica highlighted this at a workshop on cybercrime, emphasising AI’s potential to boost poverty alleviation, climate action, agricultural productivity, medical advancements, clean energy, and efficient digital government services. He noted that cyber threats are a growing global crisis, with Fiji experiencing increased cyber threats.
Legislative and International Collaboration
To combat cybercrime, Fiji has partnered with the Council of Europe, focusing on enhancing cybersecurity resilience while leveraging digital technologies. The Cybercrime Act 2021, a legislative outcome of this partnership, underscores Fiji’s commitment to creating a secure digital environment. Kamikamica emphasised the multi-pronged approach of the nation’s efforts, highlighting the importance of the Legislature in establishing a safe cyber landscape.
Strengthening Local Capabilities
Fiji’s proactive measures include the Fiji Police Force and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions serving as 24/7 contact points for cybercrime assistance, especially when dealing with data stored on servers outside Fiji. These initiatives aim to bolster local capacities to address threats like AI-driven malware and ransomware. Kamikamica stressed the need for advocating basic cyber hygiene practices among the populace to enhance overall cybersecurity.
