A TikTok video using AI to depict Queensland premier Steven Miles has ignited a controversy over the use of deepfakes in politics. The video, created by the Liberal National Party (LNP), shows Miles dancing beneath text criticising rising costs under his leadership. In response, Miles denounced the video as a “turning point for our democracy,” vowing that the state Labor party will not use AI-generated content in their campaign.
Opposition Defends AI Use in Campaign
The LNP defended their use of AI, stating the video was clearly marked as AI-generated. A spokesperson accused Miles of “baseless lying” to retain power, emphasising the video’s role in highlighting issues like rent increases and power bills under the Labor government. The Electoral Commission of Queensland clarified that while AI use is not specifically regulated, any false AI-generated content could lead to prosecution.
Broader Implications of AI in Politics
Experts warn that AI-generated content can deceive voters, especially when used subtly. Communication lecturers Susan Grantham and Patrik Wikstrom highlighted past instances of AI in politics and cautioned about its potential to spread misinformation. They noted that while AI in politics is challenging to regulate, the real issue lies in any political communication designed to deceive.
