August 13, 2024Gender Gap in AI Usage
Recent data highlights a notable gender gap in the use of generative AI, with fewer women utilising these tools compared to men, in a report by The Conversation. According to studies, 59% of men use AI weekly, compared to just 51% of women. This gap widens among younger workers, with 71% of men aged 18-25 using AI, versus 59% of women. This discrepancy is concerning as AI is set to impact a vast majority of jobs, with women disproportionately occupying roles more susceptible to automation.
Challenges and Opportunities
The underrepresentation of women in AI-related skills and positions is stark, with only 19% of digital intelligence roles in Québec, Canada, held by women. This imbalance is exacerbated by a lack of engagement with AI training, where men outnumber women three to one. Despite these challenges, AI also presents significant opportunities for women, particularly in fields where their unique perspectives can address biases and contribute to more inclusive technologies.
Future Outlook
This study may have been made in North America, but a lot of parallels can be drawn with the Pacific situation. There has been minimal involvement in STEM by Pacific women historically, but this has been rectified in places like Fiji, where nearly two thirds of graduates are women. However, there is a need for parity in STEM and AI usage & qualification in particular in order to ensure more equitable development in the AI age.
