New Legislation Passed
California lawmakers have approved several significant proposals aimed at regulating the AI industry and ensuring AI Safety, reports the Associated Press. This was earlier supported by Elon Musk, owner of social media app X, formerly Twitter, who was concerned about the increased capabilities of AI to replicate people and images. These measures include bans on deceptive news and imagery, and mandates for large social media platforms to remove deceptive materials. Lawmakers also approved legislation requiring tech companies to provide AI detection tools for users. The new rules reflect growing concerns over the misuse of AI technology and its impact on society.
Protecting Workers and Privacy
In response to the Hollywood actors’ strike last year, California’s new laws include protections for workers from AI-generated replacements. This includes safeguarding voice actors and audiobook performers from being replaced by AI clones. Additionally, there are proposals to prevent state and local agencies from using AI to replace workers in call centres and to create penalties for digitally cloning deceased individuals without consent.
Safety and Education Initiatives
The state could become a pioneer in setting safety standards for large AI models, requiring developers to disclose data used in training and setting protocols to prevent algorithmic discrimination. The legislature also passed bills to enhance AI literacy in schools, integrating AI skills into various curricula and developing guidelines for classroom use. These steps are designed to ensure a responsible and informed approach to AI integration in everyday life.
