June 13, 2024Barnard’s Unique Pyramid Approach to AI Literacy
Barnard College has introduced a pyramid-style AI literacy framework to gradually integrate artificial intelligence into its educational offerings. The pyramid approach, adapted from the University of Hong Kong, focuses initially on understanding basic AI concepts and recognizing its benefits and drawbacks. The first two levels involve workshops and sessions to help students and faculty familiarise themselves with AI tools and understand issues like bias and inaccuracies.
Building a Solid AI Foundation
The goal is to create a judgement-free environment where participants can experiment with AI, preparing them for more advanced applications in the future. Levels three and four of the pyramid will eventually push students and faculty to consider ethical implications and create their own AI tools, aiming for Barnard to become a leader in AI use within liberal arts education. This structured approach contrasts with institutions like MIT, which encourages immediate, comprehensive engagement with AI.
The Importance of AI Policies
The necessity of having an AI policy, even for institutions not yet fully engaged with the technology, is emphasised. Experts argue that clear, consistent guidelines aligned with an institution’s core values are crucial for effectively incorporating AI into educational frameworks. A recent systematic review in ScienceDirect supports this view, highlighting six key concepts for AI literacy that can guide institutions in developing their own strategies. Fiji National University at time of writing is still debating the integration of AI into its frameworks.
