March 13, 2024The marvellous use of artificial intelligence (AI) to decipher a charred scroll buried by Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago marks a significant leap in understanding ancient texts. According to The Guardian, The Vesuvius Challenge, with its focus on extracting text from high-resolution CT scans, has successfully revealed over 2,000 Greek letters. The efforts of a team of computer-savvy students winning a grand prize of $700,000 highlight the potential of AI to transform scholarly pursuits, providing invaluable insights into the intellectual and cultural life of ancient Roman times.
