June 25, 2024NHAI Collaborates with IIIT Delhi to Reduce Road Accidents
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology, Delhi (IIIT Delhi), to enhance road safety using artificial intelligence. The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), involves IIIT Delhi conducting surveys to collect imagery and data on road signages along 25,000 km of national highways. This data will be processed with AI to accurately identify and classify road signs, resulting in a comprehensive geo-stamped inventory and assessment of their condition.
AI and GIS to Improve Road Signage and Safety
IIIT Delhi’s analysis will include a gap study to compare the existing road signs with the required standards, focusing on high-speed corridors to ensure enhanced safety. This study aims to identify deficiencies and recommend improvements according to the latest codal provisions. By leveraging AI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the NHAI seeks to implement innovative solutions to address road safety challenges and reduce accidents on national highways.
Ongoing Efforts to Reduce Road Accidents
In addition to the AI initiative, the NHAI has been actively identifying and repairing black spots on highways to reduce accidents. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reported 4.61 lakh road accidents in 2022, resulting in 1.68 lakh deaths and 4.43 lakh injuries. The collaboration with IIIT Delhi is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety through advanced technology and innovation.
