Fiji Lacks Specific AI Data Protection Laws
A recent report by the AI Asia Pacific Institute reveals that Fiji does not have specific legislation for personal data protection related to AI, the Fiji Times reports. While personal privacy is protected under Clause 24 of the 2013 Constitution, the report notes that only sector-specific laws, such as the Banking Act of 1995 and the Cybercrime Act of 2021, address unauthorised disclosure of personal information.
Plans for AI Governance and National Security
In March 2024, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister announced plans to establish a framework aimed at protecting internet users from AI threats, aligning with the nation’s broader cybersecurity strategy. The plan will focus on enhancing national security through AI governance and may involve international collaboration if needed.
National Digital Strategy for Economic Growth
The report also highlights Fiji’s Cabinet approval in December 2023 for the development of a National Digital Strategy. This strategy is intended to coordinate efforts to scale digital technology, driving economic growth and sustainable development in the country.
