A Young Innovator’s Vision for Legal Accessibility
A recent graduate from the PNG University of Technology (UoT) has launched an application to assist Papua New Guineans who can’t afford professional legal advisers to help understand their legal rights. The AI legal consultation assistant app, LexPNG (short for Legal Expert PNG), was founded eight months ago by Kennioth Sausewagen, 24, from East Sepik Province. Kennioth graduated in April with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, reports the Post-Courier.
The Idea Behind LexPNG: Solving Real Legal Challenges
Kennioth’s motivation stemmed from observing that many Papua New Guineans face legal issues more than once in their lifetime. This observation led to his final year research project in 2024, which focused on the use of AI in legal consultation in PNG. The app utilizes highly trained GPT-4 models and a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) system to provide users with instant and affordable preliminary legal advice. The legal datasets used by the models are retrieved from the Pacific Legal Information Institute (PACLII), which includes PNG legislation and case law.
How It Works: Features and Functionality
Currently, the app is available on Android devices and can be downloaded through the LexPNG official website. It is open to individuals, businesses, and even legal professionals. Each user must create their own account to ensure confidentiality. The app’s core features include user authentication, email verification, encoding and decoding of uploaded legal documents, and cloud storage synchronization. Kennioth emphasizes that the app is designed to provide preliminary legal information and not to replace professional legal services.
