June 24, 2024Rise in AI-Enabled Phishing Scams
Booking.com’s Chief Information Security Officer, Marnie Wilking, warns travellers of a dramatic increase in AI-powered phishing scams. Speaking at the Collision 2024 tech conference, Wilking highlighted a surge of 500 to 900% in phishing attacks since the introduction of generative AI tools like ChatGPT. These scams target the hospitality industry, exploiting the helpful nature of hotel staff to trick them into opening malware-laden attachments.
Enhanced Security Measures
To combat these threats, Wilking recommends travellers and hosts adopt two-factor authentication (2FA). This additional security step, though sometimes inconvenient, significantly reduces the risk of phishing and credential theft. Users are urged to be cautious, avoiding suspicious emails and verifying legitimacy through direct contact with properties or customer support.
AI’s Role in Fraud Prevention
Booking.com and other companies are leveraging AI to detect and eliminate fake property listings and other scams. These AI models help block fraudulent listings before they can deceive users. Wilking also noted a growing concern over state-sponsored cyber activities targeting travel sites, emphasising the importance of robust security measures to protect sensitive information.
