Students at Busu Secondary School, one of Papua New Guinea’s top-performing institutions, have been advised to limit their mobile phone use, reports the Post Courier. During the school’s 18th graduation ceremony, parents and students were urged to prioritise academics over excessive scrolling on Facebook, TikTok, and WhatsApp. Judah Rabang, a Morobe education official, highlighted that mobile distractions and reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT are hampering students’ abilities to engage with factual information and excel academically.
Self-Discipline: A Key to Achieving Career Goals
Speakers emphasised that young minds are particularly susceptible to inappropriate online content, which can derail their aspirations. Students were encouraged to adopt self-discipline, set clear goals, and focus on academic progress to succeed in higher education and future careers. Dr. Teng Waninga, an education expert and University of Goroka Vice-Chancellor, advised students to establish long-term goals and actionable short-term priorities to stay focused and driven toward their ambitions.
