California Governor Vetoes AI Safety Bill Amid Industry Pushback
California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed a controversial AI safety bill, SB 1047, which sought to impose safety regulations on large-scale AI models costing over $100 million to train. The bill faced significant opposition from the tech industry, with critics like AI expert Fei-Fei Li arguing that it would stifle innovation. Newsom proposed a task force led by Li to develop new safety guidelines for future legislation, focusing on AI systems in high-risk environments. Despite the veto, Newsom highlighted 17 other AI-related bills he recently signed into law, including measures on election deepfakes and AI watermarking.

Pacific Island Legislators must closely follow these legal happenings, and attempt to pursue legislative arguments that protect the citizens under their care.
