October 3, 2024Two AI Tools That Boost Kenyan Farmers’ Productivity
Kenyan farmers are turning to AI tools like Virtual Agronomist and PlantVillage to improve crop yields and tackle agricultural challenges, reports the Guardian. These apps, named Virtual Agronomist and PlantVillage, offer tailored advice on fertilisation, pest control, and soil health, cutting down on guesswork and increasing efficiency.
Farmers who once relied on outdated methods and slow lab tests now receive real-time recommendations, significantly boosting productivity. Says coffee factory manager Florah Maritim: “The biggest challenge for farmers is not knowing exactly what their soil needs.” However, the main challenge facing iSDA (the NGO behind Virtual Agronomist), is the lack of digital access for target farmers, and major efforts are being pushed in order to get smartphones in the hands of farmers in Kenya and elsewhere. Despite concerns, many farmers see AI as a transformative tool in modern agriculture.
Editor’s Comment: Virtual Agronomist and PlantVillage are subscription-based apps that have proven to be effective and affordable when purchased by a community. These apps are proven commodities…c’mon Governments, NGOs, grab these apps; there’s no reason to hesitate!
