October 1, 2024Outsourcing Industry Grows Towards $500 Million Target
Fiji’s outsourcing industry currently generates $200 million annually, supporting around 8,000 jobs, reports FBC News. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica projects that this figure could rise to $500 million within the next decade, with even more growth expected. Key trends include expanding operations beyond urban centres into areas like Drasa Vitogo, Navua, and possibly Labasa and Savusavu, bringing employment opportunities to rural communities.
Challenges in Workforce Supply
Despite this growth, the industry faces a significant challenge in finding enough workers. Kamikamica acknowledges that the shortage of available employees is a concern and is working closely with industry leaders to ensure a steady pipeline of trained professionals. The growing sector needs more qualified workers to sustain its expansion, particularly in new areas of outsourcing like Artificial Intelligence, which has already seen a local firm employ 12 Fijians.
Government Support and Future Partnerships
The Fijian government is committed to supporting the outsourcing industry, with partnerships being explored with global companies such as Google, which operates a major call centre in the Philippines. Kamikamica is optimistic that Fiji could capture a significant portion of this market, leveraging its growing expertise and potential in the outsourcing space.
