Silicon Valley’s Race Against Aging
Tech billionaires, including Bryan Johnson and Elon Musk, are investing heavily in radical anti-aging technologies, reports The Sun. Johnson, known for his controversial plasma transfusions involving his son and father, aims to reverse ageing by swapping blood between generations. Despite receiving a litre of his son’s plasma, Johnson noted no significant change in his biomarkers, while his father’s ageing slowed by 25 years. However, the FDA has warned against such treatments, labelling them unproven and potentially harmful.
Musk’s Neuralink and Digital Immortality
Elon Musk’s Neuralink project is pushing boundaries in brain-computer interface technology, with the potential to store and upload consciousness. Musk envisions a future where memories and brain states can be backed up and restored, possibly leading to a form of digital immortality. While the technology is in its infancy, Neuralink has already faced ethical concerns, particularly regarding animal testing. Despite this, Musk believes such advancements are “physically possible,” even if far from realisation.
Big Tech’s Pursuit of Eternal Life
Other tech giants like Jeff Bezos and Larry Page are also delving into anti-aging research. Bezos has invested in Altos Labs, a startup focused on biological reprogramming to extend lifespan, while Page supports Calico, a Google-affiliated company exploring the biology of ageing. Both firms aim to develop interventions that could lead to longer, healthier lives, though their work remains largely experimental and shrouded in secrecy.
