AI Researchers Push for New Ways to Verify Humans Online
A group of 32 researchers from OpenAI, Microsoft, Harvard, and other institutions have called for the development of “personhood credentials” to differentiate humans from AI bots online, reports the Washington Post via MSN. As AI technology advances, these bots could potentially overwhelm the internet, making it challenging to distinguish between real users and AI. The proposed system would allow people to prove their humanity offline and receive an encrypted credential to use across various online services, preserving their privacy while ensuring authenticity.
Current Systems Are Inadequate
The paper argues that existing methods for proving one’s humanity, such as CAPTCHA puzzles and selfies, are becoming outdated as AI becomes more sophisticated. Even video chats might soon fail to guarantee a person’s identity, with AI potentially simulating real or fictitious individuals convincingly. However, the researchers warn against strict identity-verification systems that could infringe on privacy and free expression rights. Instead, they advocate for personhood credentials that enable anonymous online interactions without tracking users’ activities.
Debate on Implementation and Impact
While some experts see value in better verification systems, there is debate over how to implement them and who should be responsible. OpenAI’s Worldcoin project, which scans irises for digital passports, is one approach but has faced criticism and regulatory scrutiny. The researchers emphasise that multiple systems for verifying personhood should exist to prevent any single entity from gaining too much control. Critics argue that the responsibility should lie with AI companies to ensure their bots do not impersonate humans, rather than forcing individuals to prove their humanity.
