August 6, 2024Cyber Security Forum Boosts Digital Safety
The UNDP reports in Pohnpei, the Federated States of Micronesia, a recent Cyber Security Forum aims to strengthen digital resilience and online safety. Hosted by Micronesian Productions with support from the UNDP Pacific Digital Democracy Initiative and the European Union, the event gathered government officials, media, private sector representatives, and civil society to discuss cybersecurity. Keynote speakers highlighted the importance of proactive measures to protect against online threats and the need for robust cybersecurity training.
Focus on Women and Youth Protection
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Kevin Petrini emphasised the need to safeguard vulnerable groups, particularly women and youth, from online harassment and abuse. The forum also addressed emerging cyber threats and the role of digital platforms in both empowering and potentially endangering users.This discussion was particularly imperative due to the increasing usage & presence of artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency. The discussions underscored the necessity for improved cybersecurity practices to ensure digital platforms are used safely and responsibly.
Future Workshops and Summits Planned
The insights gained from the forum will be broadcast through a local radio program, extending the reach of cybersecurity education. Additionally, the PDDI will host workshops to boost the digital skills of civil society organisations and prepare for the South-South Summit on Digital Transformation later this year in Fiji. These initiatives aim to enhance the digital capabilities of communities and improve overall cybersecurity resilience.
