The “C the Signs” artificial intelligence program has significantly improved cancer detection rates at GP practices in England, increasing from 58.7% to 66.0%. This tool analyses patients’ medical records, integrating past history, test results, prescriptions, and personal characteristics like age and family history. It prompts GPs to ask about new symptoms and recommends appropriate tests or referrals based on detected patterns.
Impact and Validation
Used in about 1,400 practices, the tool was tested in 35 practices, showing remarkable results. It has successfully identified over 50 different types of cancers, offering not just earlier but faster diagnoses. Dr. Bea Bakshi, a GP who co-created the system, emphasized its effectiveness by highlighting cases where patients received timely cancer diagnoses that might have been missed otherwise.
Future Prospects
The NHS aims to diagnose 75% of cancers at stages one or two by 2028. AI tools like “C the Signs” are crucial in this effort, complementing improved patient awareness and better diagnostic technologies. Prof Peter Johnson, National Clinical Director for Cancer at NHS England, stressed the importance of using up-to-date technology to enhance cancer care and reduce waiting times for diagnoses.
