NASA’s Perseverance rover is breaking new ground by using artificial intelligence (AI) to autonomously identify minerals on Mars. This marks the first instance of AI-driven decision-making on the Red Planet. The AI supports the Planetary Instrument for X-ray Lithochemistry (PIXL), which maps the chemical composition of minerals, helping scientists determine if rocks could have supported microbial life in Mars’ ancient past.
Advanced Mineral Mapping: How Does It Work?
The AI system, known as “adaptive sampling,” allows PIXL to position itself accurately against rock targets and analyse them in real-time. This process eliminates the need for rescan by human operators, speeding up data collection and analysis. Abigail Allwood, PIXL’s principal investigator, emphasises that the AI enables more efficient identification of key scientific targets, enhancing the overall mission’s productivity.
