July 10, 2024Apple AI Features Might Not Be Free for Long
Apple recently introduced its Apple Intelligence suite at the WWDC 2024 event, currently available for free across iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that these features may soon be divided into two tiers (Hindustani Times). The first tier will remain free but offer limited features, while the second, called Apple Intelligence+, will be a paid version providing the full suite of AI functionalities across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This shift suggests Apple aims to generate more revenue from subscriptions than device sales.
Monetising Apple Intelligence
Gurman indicates that Apple plans to make significant profits from these paid services. Additionally, Apple intends to cut subscription revenue from every AI partner integrated into its devices. This strategic move aligns with Apple’s broader aim to capitalise on its AI offerings. Another potential development is integrating AI into the Vision Pro mixed reality headset, although this feature is still in the conceptual phase.
AI Enhancements for Daily Use
Apple Intelligence offers several useful features, such as prioritising notifications, summarising and correcting texts, and generating images through the ‘Image Playground’ feature. It can also perform actions like opening specific files and playing audio content on command. These capabilities, combined with the potential upcoming subscription model, indicate a significant shift in how Apple plans to deliver and monetize its AI innovations.
