On June 27, experts in AI and communications gathered in the Vatican for a conference titled “The Algorithm at the Service of Humankind: Communicating in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” The event focused on the ethical and anthropological implications of AI. Dr. Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, raised questions about AI’s impact on truth, freedom, and responsibility in media. He emphasised the importance of protecting media professionals from AI’s influence and ensuring that large AI platforms do not exploit human data.
Echoing Pope Francis’ Teachings
Fr. Lucio Ruiz, Secretary of the Dicastery for Communication, highlighted Pope Francis’ insights on AI. He drew parallels to historical technological advancements supported by the Church, such as the Vatican’s early adoption of the printing press, radio, and the internet. These examples underscore the Church’s ongoing commitment to guiding humanity through technological changes.
Ethical and Anthropological Concerns
Speakers like Fr. Paolo Benanti and Nunzia Ciardi addressed the ethical and anthropological impacts of AI. Fr. Benanti stressed the need for regulation to manage AI responsibly, comparing it to traffic laws for cars. Ciardi pointed out the massive data collection underlying AI and its potential effects on democracy. Professor Mario Rasetti warned about the privatization of knowledge and called for rigorous scientific definitions of AI to ensure it measures intelligence, truth, and causality accurately.
