Since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, the demand for digital freelancers in writing and coding has dropped by 21%, according to a study by Imperial College Business School, Harvard Business School, and the German Institute for Economic Research. Fields prone to automation, such as writing, software development, and image generation, have seen significant declines in job listings, with graphic design and 3D modelling roles falling by 17%.

The study, titled “Who is AI Replacing? The Impact of Generative AI on Online Freelancing Platforms,” analysed nearly two million job postings across 61 countries. However, she highlighted that new job opportunities will emerge as technology evolves.
Adapting to the AI Era
Freelancers can protect themselves by diversifying their skill sets and focusing on areas requiring human creativity and emotional intelligence, such as strategic thinking and complex problem-solving. Embracing AI tools to enhance productivity and quality, building a personal brand, and extensive networking are also crucial strategies. Despite AI’s rise, human skills in producing precise and error-free work remain invaluable.
