Pope Francis, in a historic address to the G7 summit, highlighted both the dangers and promises of artificial intelligence (AI). He described AI as a “cognitive-industrial revolution” with the potential to democratise knowledge and advance scientific research, while also warning of increased inequalities and social injustices. The Pope stressed that AI’s influence extends beyond technology, affecting the “techno-human condition” where human interaction with tools reflects our openness to innovation and to each other.

The Pope emphasised the critical distinction between human and algorithmic decision-making. While AI can make technical choices based on data, humans possess wisdom and the ability to decide with moral and ethical considerations. He pointed to the necessity of human oversight in critical areas, such as banning lethal autonomous weapons, to ensure ethical governance.

Pope Francis underscored the need for a global framework of “algor-ethics” to guide AI development. This framework should incorporate diverse cultural and religious values to address the ethical dilemmas posed by AI. He called for political action to navigate AI’s challenges, aiming to channel human creativity and progress in ethical directions.
